Still, fasted workouts usually make more sense in the morning, unless you work shifts or have a very different routine. After all, the idea is simple: wake up, put on your shoes, and get your workout done before the day properly begins, without having breakfast first.

For some people, that feels productive, light, and it makes complete sense. For others, it sounds like a fast route to dizziness, bad decisions, and regretting every life choice halfway through a workout. Like many fitness topics, the answer varies. So, do fasted workouts actually work? Let’s take a closer look.

What are fasted workouts?

Fasted workouts are exactly what they sound like: workouts done on an empty stomach. In most cases, this means training first thing in the morning, before breakfast, after your overnight fast.

On paper, it makes sense. If you haven’t eaten recently, your body has less immediate fuel available from food, so it has to rely more on stored energy. This is why fasted workouts are often associated with burning fat. But, as with most fitness trends, the reality is a little less convenient.

Do fasted workouts work?

Yes and no. The idea behind fasted training is simple: if you exercise without eating first, your body has less immediate fuel from food, and it may rely more on stored energy, including fat.

That’s why fasted workouts are often linked to fat burning. However, burning more fat during a workout is not the same as losing more body fat overall. Fat loss depends on your full day and week, not just one session before breakfast.

So, if two people train the same way and eat the same amount overall, the person training fasted is not automatically going to lose more fat. Fasted workouts can be useful, but they are not a shortcut.

Are fasted workouts for you?

That depends on how they make you feel. If training before breakfast helps you feel lighter, avoid digestive discomfort, and stay consistent, fasted workouts may be a good option, especially for lower-intensity sessions like walking, cycling, mobility work, or steady cardio.

However, they are not ideal for everyone. If you feel dizzy, weak, irritable, or unable to perform properly, your body might prefer some fuel first, especially before strength training, HIIT, sprints, or longer endurance sessions.

Fasted workouts can be a tool, but not a rule. If they fit your routine, they can be worth trying. If they make your workouts worse, there’s no need to force them.

Fasted workouts are training sessions done after several hours without eating, usually before breakfast.
